Ho
Sir,
With reference to your letter of the 30th ultimo (27475/1900), in the last paragraph of which it was requested that Mr Legge should interview Mr Young, a candidate for the post of Assistant Master at the Belilios School,Hong Kong, early in September, I am directed by the Secretary of State to
acquaint you, for Mr Chamberlain's information, that Mr Legge
was unable to elicit a reply from Mr Young till the latter
wrote on the 11th instant withdrawing his candidature,
Mr G.H.B.Matthews, who applied before for the post pf Headmaster,is willing to accept that of Assistant Master. Mr Matthews' testimonials, returned by you on the 7th
instant, are again forwarded for perusal. He is a well
educated man and appears to Mr Legge to be socially of a class
superiorto the average certificated teacher. The fact that he
has already had to do with Asiatics is certainly a strong point
in his favour. He is most anxious to go back to the East
because it suits his wife's health, and he professes himself
quite satisfied with the salary offered.
A letter from him dated the 11th instant, confirming his
willingness to accept the post is enclosed herewith.
I am,
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Henry Mungushame.
